Unboxing Beauty July: Bombay and Cedar

Written and Edited by: Marrista K. Stubbs

Hello, beautiful people! It’s been a minute, but I’m back with another unboxing. Sorry for the wait, this one took a bit longer to get here (I got it the last day of July😫). And I wanted a little time to test everything out before I wrote a proper review. SO, it looks like we’ll have two unboxings for August! Both from Bombay and Cedar: a black-owned, vegan, and cruelty-free subscription box. They offer two boxes on their site and today I’ll be looking at the Beauty Box.

Bombay and Cedar – July Beauty Box

The Beauty Box starts at $32 (a price that lowers when you buy in bulk) and offers “an over $100 value” in each box. With changing themes and sneak-peeks of a couple of items in each box, they do their best to get subscribers excited about what’s to come each month. There’s also a personal profile you can fill out that asks about your level of veganism, skin tone, and other beauty questions to help them create personalized boxes. If you like what you see and want to try the box yourself, use our discount code: MELANINSQUARED10. It’ll give you 10% off of any subscription on their site! Without further ado, let’s dig into the Bombay and Cedar Beauty Box.

Hello Glow Highlighter (St. Bart’s), Mai Couture $12 USD

What a great concept! Mai Couture has come up with a portable highlighter! This book has 30 sheets of tear-and-apply highlighter in Rose Gold. These biodegradable and recyclable sheets of “makeup paper” offer a quick and compact way to touch up makeup on the go. It also comes with two sheets of blotting papers for your oily days and a blue pocket book to protect your papers on the go!

Revele Heated Eyelash Curler

Heated Eyelash Curler, Revele – $6.98 USD

It was so hard to find information for this product! This subscription box doesn’t come with an information card for each product like most others do, so that’s a bummer. This little beauty requires 2 AAA batteries (not included), so I had to run to the store quickly so I could try it out. I’m glad I did! This heated eyelash curler does a great job of lifting my lashes in half the time of its mechanical counterpart. Use a little bit of a lighter touch with this, as too much pressure will result in a pointed curl instead of a rounded one. Be careful! This thing gets pretty warm and there’s only one heat setting. This might be too hot for you if you have sensitive skin.

Melting Lip Powder (Red Cherry) , CLE Cosmetics – $20 USD

This is another excellent execution of makeup magic! This strange red powder transformed the instant it touched my lips. It is an actual experience to use this cooling lip tint and I like the subtle pop of color it adds. It’s called a lip powder, but that’s not its only use. This powder can easily and effectively be used as eyeshadow and blush as well! With its multiple uses and long-lasting color I may add a couple of new shades to my collection.

Face the Day (Tinted SPF), Willa – $18 USD

Unfortunately I didn’t really get to try this one out. The tint in this SPF was just a bit too light for my skin tone. When I did try it, it was smooth and went on easily. However, I was unable to test Face the Day to its fullest.

Correcting Facial Serum, Organic & Botanic – $19.99 USD

I wasn’t able to find a parent website for this serum. With not much information to go on, I’m not sure what this serum is supposed to be “correcting”. Mostly likely dark spots, as citrus is often used in brightening products. I’ve only been using it for about a week as a night serum, so no noticeable changes yet. If that changes I’ll be sure to put it here first! I expected this serum to smell citrusy, but it’s more medicinal. It absorbs into my skin pretty well and leaves me feeling a bit tight. When I wake up in the morning, however, my skin feels smooth and normal (I have combination skin).

Teeth Whitening Gel, Skin Chemists – $46.85 USD

I almost died when I saw that this was almost $50 😱👻. However, considering that this is a popular brand in its origin country of England, I shouldn’t be too surprised. The pump isn’t the best on this bottle, but once you get some out a little goes a long way with this thin gel. I take pretty good care of my teeth already and I’ve still noticed my teeth getting whiter. I don’t know if I’d drop the coins on this, but Skin Chemists’ product gives noticeable results quickly. I think I can confidently say that I’ll be smiling a lot brighter by the end of this bottle.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Overall I’m enjoying the bulk of the products I received in the Bombay and Cedar Beauty Box. I’m a bit disappointed with how long it took to get to me and the fact that there’s no information about the products inside. Considering everything that’s going on with Covid-19, I’ve learned to expect some delays these days and look forward to the next beauty adventure! I’m excited to see what the next box holds. Don’t forget to try a box for yourself and save 10% on your subscription by using MELANINSQUARED10 at check out. Until next time Squares, be well!
